After multiple allegations of racism and bullying came out against Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters, the Flames have announced he has re-signed.

It has been a very rough season for the Calgary Flames, both on and off the ice. On the ice, the Flames, who won the Pacific Division last season, are struggling to tread water, as they have a .500 point percentage with 28 points in 28 games. Off the ice, they’ve recently had to deal with multiple allegations about head coach Bill Peters.

According to Frank Seravalli of TSN, the Flames will reportedly get rid of Peters in a press conference. For what it’s worth, the Flames have a press conference scheduled at 12:30 p.m. EST. The team has yet to confirm Seravalli’s report, but given how things have been trending, that seems to be the obvious reason for the press conference.

Last week, the Toronto Maple Leafs fired head coach Mike Babcock. Immediately after that, reports came out about Babcock forcing Mitch Marner to make a list of which of his teammates he felt worked hard. He proceeded to share the list with Marner’s teammates, including those who he put at the bottom of his list.

This encouraged former AHL player Akim Alieu to discuss an incident he had with Peters. Back when Peters coached for the Rockford Icehogs, he reportedly used the n-word multiple times. Later, former Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Michal Jordan came out with allegations of bullying and abuse, as he said Peters used to hit his players.

The NHL and the Flames have been investigating Peters ever since Alieu’s allegations initially came out. He was not behind the bench on Wednesday against the Buffalo Sabres.

UPDATE (12:34 p.m. EST): Peters has resigned from his role with the Flames.

It will be interesting to see what happens if – and it appears, when – the Flames fire Peters. Will they be responsible for paying the rest of his contract? Or will the Flames try to get out of paying him because Peters obviously forced the team’s hand?

Regardless of what happens there, it’s obvious that Peters isn’t going to be coaching again in the NHL anytime soon. And, frankly, good riddance. The NHL claims “Hockey Is For Everyone”. If that’s the case, someone like Peters can’t be allowed to represent the league.
