Columbus Blue Jackets: Seth Jones out indefinitely with ankle injury
The surging Columbus Blue Jackets will be without their best player. Seth Jones will be out indefinitely thanks to an ankle injury.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are red hot. They’ve won eight of their last 10 games and currently sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division with 68 points in 56 games. However, the Blue Jackets are about to undergo a serious test, as the team announced on Monday that star defenseman Seth Jones will be out indefinitely thanks to an ankle injury.
Seth Jones has been put on the injured reserve list thanks to his ankle injury that he suffered on Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche. He’s a huge loss for the Blue Jackets, as he’s their number one defenseman.

In 56 games so far this season, Jones has six goals, 24 assists, and 30 points. He averages 25:17 of ice time per game, which is the sixth-highest mark in the NHL. Jones’ 30 points are tied for 23rd in the NHL among defensemen. The Blue Jackets have recalled Gabriel Carlsson from the AHL to take his spot on the roster.
What This Means
This has a huge impact on the Blue Jackets for several reasons. Firstly, it’s obviously never a good thing to lose someone as impactful as Jones. The Blue Jackets will have to rely even more heavily on Zach Werenski and David Savard now.
Secondly, this means the Blue Jackets likely won’t be trading anyone at the trade deadline. They were a candidate to swap a defenseman with a forward, but with Jones out, it’s hard to see them making that kind of move.
Thirdly, the Blue Jackets could turn to the trade market to add a defenseman. They probably won’t be too active because they don’t have a second-round pick or third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see them add at least a depth defenseman.
