Milestones might be some of the most strenuous times for athletes or at least the buildup to them. Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is living proof of this.

For the longest time fans from around the NHL watched Alex Ovechkin struggle with winning the Stanley Cup. He finally proved everyone wrong in 2018 when he led the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup in Las Vegas against the Golden Knights. Now he is going after 700 career NHL goals.

You could make the argument that scoring 700 goals is an achievement that Ovechkin has been working on for 1,140 games and 15 seasons, but this is not an achievement that Ovechkin has been dreaming of his entire career. Instead, this is just something that comes with being great. Ovechkin is just two goals away from hitting 700 career goals, but since getting two goals away he has struggled.

He is now on a season-high four-game goalless streak. The fact that four games is his season-high goalless streak is a testimony to just how good Ovechkin is.

While he might not care about getting his 700th goal as much as making the playoffs and competing for the Cup, Ovechkin still does have to deal with all the attention right now.

All eyes are on him from around the league as he gets closer to reaching his 700th NHL goal, and maybe today is his day. Tonight Ovechkin is set to face-off against the Vegas Golden Knights in Vegas, a city he already has accomplished some amazing things in.

I know that I am going to be watching tonight’s game eagerly waiting for Ovi to strike! The crazy thing about Ovechkin and his goal-scoring ability is that he is not going to end at 700. Ovechkin might actually have a chance at passing Wayne Gretzky at 894 goals. Ovechkin is only 34 years old and still does have some good hockey ahead of him, and he has not slowed down his goal-scoring ways yet!

Ovechkin is arguably the closest an NHL player is ever going to be at passing a Wayne Gretzky scoring title. Ovi deserves to do it, as he has scored so many incredible goals in his career. Who am I kidding? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, he still needs to reach 700!
