The Colorado Avalanche have traded defenseman Calle Rosen for Maple Leafs’ goaltender Michael Hutchinson.

Nothing’s busier than hockey clubs on the day of the trade deadline! One of Colorado Avalanche‘s trades today was for Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Michael Hutchinson in exchange for defenseman Calle Rosen.

Even though this is a relatively low-impact trade, it gives the Avalanche a goaltender, which they need since Philipp Grubauer is out with a lower-body injury. He’ll be the backup for Pavel Francouz, and we’ll most likely see Hunter Miska sent back down to the Colorado Eagles until such a time that Grubauer is able to return.

More from Puck Prose

Hutchinson, the twenty-nine-year-old Ontario native, comes to the Avalanche with a .905% save percentage and five shutouts over the three teams he’s been with during his 126 games. He’s played for the Boston Bruins, the Winnipeg Jets, and the Maple Leafs.

He currently holds a 50-52-14 record for those games. Hutchinson has appeared with the Maple Leafs in 15 games this season, with an .886% save percentage and a 4-9-1 record.

In return, the Maple Leafs received Calle Rosen, a defenseman on Colorado’s AHL team, the Colorado Eagles. He was originally signed to the Maple Leafs in 2017 and then traded last year to the Colorado Avalanche.

He’s played 16 NHL games on the Avalanche and the Maple Leafs, tallying up a goal and three assists. He’s shone on the AHL, where he’s played 151 total games between the Marlies and the Eagles, racking up 83 points (14 goals and 69 assists). It will be interesting to see where they put Rosen if they keep him at the AHL level or bring him up to the Maple Leafs now that he’s back in Toronto.

Personally, I would have liked to see the Avalanche acquire someone with a bit better percentage and record. With the Avalanche’s main goalie out, it would have been nice to get someone who could equally share the load with Francouz, which it seems like Hutchinson can’t.

Next. Every team's greatest player of all time. dark

However, he has done well on the AHL, bringing the St. John’s IceCaps to the Calder Finals in 2014, so maybe he just needs to find his footing. Either way, a new goaltender will be good for the Avalanche, and maybe Hutchinson will surprise me.
