Washington Capitals: Parting ways with Brendan Leipsic is the right move

The Washington Capitals would be wise to get rid of forward Brendan Leipsic, as his baggage outweighs what he brings to the team at this point.

Though the NHL season is currently being put on hold, there’s still quite a bit of news out there. Earlier this week, Washington Capitals forward Brendan Leipsic got himself in a deep hole after private messages from a group chat on Instagram got leaked.

In those leaked messages, Leipsic made fun of two of his teammates, Nic Dowd and Garnett Hathaway. Additionally, he made fun of the weight and looks of several women, including the significant others of his former teammates.

Though those messages should have never been leaked and whoever leaked them deserves to face appropriate legal ramifications, Leipsic also should never have made those comments. In these times, you have to assume anything you say in private will be made public.

You can find screenshots of his messages linked here, but be warned, a lot of his comments are inappropriate. According to Darren Dreger, the Capitals are expected to announce something regarding Leipsic sometime on Friday. They are expected to release him.

UPDATE: They have put him on waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.

The Capitals should part ways with Leipsic and never look back. They should do so for several reasons. First of all, it’s not like Leipsic is a crucial player for the Capitals. Ever since they traded for Ilya Kovalchuk at the trade deadline, he’s been a healthy scratch. Leipsic has not played since Feb. 23 and hasn’t played in any of their last seven games.

Parting ways with him makes sense on the ice, as he’s not even a part of the Capitals’ regular lineup. Leipsic has too much baggage to be worth it, especially for someone who doesn’t even play.

Secondly, what he said is simply unacceptable. If I said those things about my coworkers, there’s a very good chance I’d be fired on the spot. Again, his messages should not have been leaked, but the Capitals can’t continue to employ Leipsic after what he said about his teammates and the wives of his former teammates.

Frankly, Leipsic should probably start taking some lessons in Russian because it’s hard to see any NHL team (or AHL team for that matter) being willing to put up with him. Sadly, that’s not because of what he said about women. It’s because of what he said about women who happened to be the significant others of his former teammates.
