Despite a rough season on paper, Dylan Holloway is one of the best prospects eligible for the 2020 NHL Draft.

The 2020 NHL Draft will be one of the deeper ones in years. Even once you look past the top five prospects, there’s another tier of at least 10 to 15 prospects who could become impact players in the NHL. One prospect to keep an eye on is forward Dylan Holloway.

Holloway played the University of Wisconsin this year. Though his draft year wasn’t overly strong, he still stood out in various ways. Holloway is a bit raw, but his upside is pretty high.

Strengths

Holloway’s skating is what really stands out the most to me. He’s an outstanding skater with top-notch speed and agility. Holloway is also a very effective skater and a strong one as well.

I’m also a fan of what he does with the puck. Holloway is very confident on rush attempts and with his speed, he gets quite a few of them. He’s great at creating passing and shooting lanes, though he hasn’t developed much of a finishing ability yet.

Holloway won’t be winning any Selke Trophies, but he’s good defensively. I like his positioning and his hockey IQ. Holloway wasn’t used much on Wisconsin’s PK, but the few times I got to see him there, I liked what I saw.

Weaknesses

I have several concerns about Holloway. The most glaring one is his production doesn’t match his skill. 17 points in 35 games is nothing to sneeze at for an 18-year-old freshman in college hockey, but at the same time, he didn’t even crack the top 10 in freshman scoring (under 19 years old).

He also didn’t really stand out on a team that, frankly, wasn’t very good. Granted, part of this was due to guys like Alex Turcotte and Cole Caufield getting more playing time. But still, considering his skill level, I wasn’t overly impressed with him.

Potential And Comparison

Holloway has a very high upside. If he starts scoring, watch out. Holloway is a great example of the eye test versus the stats test and how the two can differ. The eye test is very good, and even great at times. But his stats test is noticeably more underwhelming.
