With the NHL season on pause and lots of the world shut down, hockey players have been finding very interesting ways to stay in shape.

Most gyms and ice rinks have been closed due to the global pandemic, leaving NHL players stuck at home and forced to find creative ways to stay in shape. Many of them have posted fun videos online such as Mitch Marner on rollerblades stickhandling with his dog and Jonathan Bernier doing squats and using his kids as weights.

The Tkachuk’s have been doing a series on Sportsnet called “Stuck with the Tkachuk’s” in which they play a different sport every week. From wake surfing to squash, Matthew and Brady Tkachuk compete in a variety of sports for brother supremacy.

Patrick Marleau‘s Christina wife posted a funny video of her husband rollerblading at home and his son chasing after him yelling “no rollerblading in the house!” In fact, with the quarantine and ice being hard to find, rollerblades have become very popular in the hockey community.

Many players are turning to rollerblades to help them maintain their skating stride including stars like Evgeni Malkin and Claude Giroux, who was skating around the neighborhood while pushing his kid in a stroller.

However, the most insane thing a player has done to stay in shape is serving his mandatory military time in Switzerland. Nico Hischier thought this unorthodox NHL season was a good time to complete his military obligation.

He said that he saw this as a good way to stay in shape as he didn’t have much equipment at home. With the army, he works out twice a day and learns first aid.

The NHL’s Phase 2 continues and players are allowed to attend voluntary training sessions but this only applies to players who will be part of the play-in and playoffs. Players that are on teams that didn’t qualify don’t have access to ice time and will have to continue to be creative with their workouts for the next little while.
