The Ottawa Senators will have plenty of options with the third overall pick.

The Ottawa Senators didn’t come out of the NHL Draft Lottery with the most ideal outcome. However, they still ended the evening with two of the top five picks in the 2020 NHL Draft. With their own pick, the Senators got the fifth overall pick. However, thanks to the Erik Karlsson trade with the San Jose Sharks, they got their 2020 first-round pick. And with that pick, the Senators got the third overall pick.

Armed with two top-five picks, Ottawa can give their rebuild a huge spark if they nail their top two picks. Obviously, though, it’s more important for the Senators to nail the third overall pick. In a top-heavy draft, the Senators are going to have a ton of options with their top five picks. That’s even more true with the third pick.

So let’s take a look at some of their options.

Several major analysts have Quinton Byfield ranked third in the draft. However, it’s quite likely the Los Angeles Kings will pick him with the second overall pick. And frankly, it’s hard to argue why they shouldn’t pick him there. But on the off chance Byfield is still on the board when the Senators have the third overall pick, they should sprint up to the podium.

I like Jamie Drysdale as the best defenseman in the 2020 draft. However, he’s a better pick at the number five spot than the number three spot. Drysdale will most likely be around when Ottawa has the fifth overall pick.

Considering the Senators will have three first-round picks unless the New York Islanders win the draft lottery, it would be wise for them to try to patch up multiple holes. And the Senators could sure use some help on their blueline.

I like Cole Perfetti a lot, but I’m not sure I like him enough to draft him with the third overall pick. There’s a good chance he’ll still be available with the fifth overall pick.
