John Chayka’s time with the Arizona Coyotes has come to an end.

The Arizona Coyotes are in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2011-12 season. However, most of the attention paid to them has been off the ice in recent weeks. Things have boiled over, as general manager John Chayka has reportedly terminated his own contract with three years left on his deal.

This reportedly happened several days ago, but the team has just released a statement confirming that Chayka has left the team. Chayka has released one as well, according to Craig Morgan.

According to Elliotte Friedman, the Coyotes are expected to name Steve Sullivan, currently an assistant general manager with the team, as the interim general manager.

Sullivan has served as the general manager of the Tucson Roadrunners, the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate, since the start of the 2017-18 season.

This ends what had become a very awkward situation. Rumors of a rift came up a few days earlier. It appears now that Chayka will be heading elsewhere after leading the Coyotes to their first postseason appearance during his tenure. He joined the Coyotes in 2014 and was promoted to general manager in 2017.

Who knows what’s next for Chayka, but this is certainly a huge twist to the ending of his time in Arizona. It’s hard to judge a lot of what he did because it’s obvious he was sitting at the poker table of general managers with a suboptimal hand.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Taylor Hall dinner is what did it. The Coyotes have recently gotten new owners. With that has come the hiring and firing of various front office personnel. Perhaps Chayka knew it was his time to go. Reportedly, Chayka wasn’t involved in contract extension talks with Hall, who will be a free agent after this season. Hall was acquired by the Coyotes in December.
