The first puck drop in over four months will happen at 4:00 pm EST when the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Philadelphia Flyers.

Finally, hockey is back. The first puck drop since mid-March will occur a little after 4:00 p.m. EST when the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers do battle in an exhibition game before the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It’s merely an exhibition game, but it’s hockey!

Both teams haven’t played since mid-March, but expect a bit of passion to be shown on the ice between these two in-state rivals. They’re fine-tuning their games and trying to get all the rust out of their systems before the postseason starts on August 1.

It’s been a while since both teams have played, but hockey is finally back.

More from Puck Prose

The Penguins are honestly probably just trying to get through this game healthy. Considering how often the injury bug bit them during the regular season, that’s a lot harder than it sounds.

The big story for the Penguins is if Sidney Crosby plays (he’s a game-time decision), they’ll be icing a fully healthy lineup, which they haven’t been able to do since at least early November.

Jake Guentzel will be making his return to the ice after an injury cut his season short. The Penguins would probably like to see him do some damage in today’s game. It’ll be interesting to see how Pittsburgh juggles their forward lines, as they have so many options.

Another story to watch is their goaltending. It remains to be seen who will get the start in the postseason between Matt Murray and Tristan Jarry. The former has a very strong playoff resume, as he has won two Stanley Cups, but at the same time, the latter has posted undeniably stronger numbers.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers had a strong roster heading into this season. However, there were some questions about their goaltending and their defense. Those questions were answered, so perhaps it’s not shocking they were among the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

James van Riemsdyk was injured back in March, but he’ll be back in the lineup, which should give an already impressive group of forwards a nice boost. The Flyers have more than 12 NHL caliber forwards, so it’ll be fascinating to see if anyone can cement their spot in the bottom-six.
