The New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes face off in Game 1 of the play-in round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Saturday starting at noon.
Fans have been waiting for the official return of hockey since mid-March. On Saturday, Aug. 1, it officially happens, starting at noon when the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes kick off their play-in round series of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Like all Eastern Conference play-in round games, this game will be held in Toronto. This should be a very exciting game, as both teams are set to play and they both hope to officially make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Rangers come into this matchup as the underdog despite sweeping the Hurricanes during the regular season. They are led by Hart Trophy finalist Artemi Panarin and center Mika Zibanejad. Their defense is led by Jacob Trouba. Defenseman Tony DeAngelo will be a game-time decision as he missed practice for an undisclosed reason on Friday.
It remains to be seen who the blue shirts go with in goal. Igor Shesterkin has taken the league by storm, posting a .932% save percentage in 12 games with a 10-2-0 record. One of those 10 wins was a win over Carolina on Feb. 21. They could also go with the veteran Henrik Lundqvist, who has historically done quite well against the Canes.
CAROLINA HURRICANES
Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes come into this series as the ever-so-slight favorites. They will be without defenseman Brett Pesce, though he could return later in the playoffs should Carolina advance that far. Dougie Hamilton will be out for Game 1, though he’s improving and could come back later in the series.
Much like their opponents, the Canes have yet to officially announce a Game 1 starter in goal. It will be either Petr Mrazek or James Reimer. For either one, a Game 1 start will be their first meaningful game back in the net since the now infamous David Ayres game, during which both got injured and an emergency goalie led the Hurricanes to a win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Offensively, the Hurricanes are led by Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen, and Andrei Svechnikov. Keep an eye on Vincent Trocheck, as he’ll be a key player for the Canes this series.
