The Washington Capitals begin their first-round series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the New York Islanders

The real Stanley Cup Playoffs have arrived. In round 1, the Washington Capitals will face the New York Islanders. Game 1 of their series will take on place on Wednesday, August 12, starting at 3:00 p.m. EST.

That, of course, assumes the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins, who play at 11 a.m. EST, don’t have a five-overtime game like the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tampa Bay Lightning did.

The Capitals will be squaring off against their old bench boss Barry Trotz, who helped the franchise win their first ever Stanley Cup in 2018. It will be an emotional matchup for sure, as Trotz will be trying to get his underdog Islanders to overcome another tough obstacle.

INJURIES

For the Capitals, Norris Trophy finalist defenseman John Carlson will be a game-time decision. Center Lars Eller will not be playing, as he likely couldn’t get himself back in game shape after briefly leaving for the birth of his child. He should play in Game 2, though.

Johnny Boychuk’s status for the New York Islanders is unknown.

PREVIEW

The Capitals came into the bubble as the third-seed in the Eastern Conference and that’s exactly where they finished the round-robin tournament. They’re hoping their veteran team can flip the switch and quickly get into the intensity of playoff hockey.

Meanwhile, the Islanders are coming off an impressive play-in series victory against the Florida Panthers. The Capitals, though, should provide a much greater challenge for the Islanders.
