The Washington Capitals look to even up their Stanley Cup Playoffs series with the New York Islanders Friday at 8:00 p.m. EST.

In 2018, when the Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup, they had to come back from a 1-0 deficit thrice during their postseason run. They’ll have to do it again if they hope to advance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as they lost 4-2 to the New York Islanders in Game 1.

After taking a 2-0 lead, the Capitals fell apart, as the Islanders scored the next four goals. Both of Washington’s goals came from T.J. Oshie. Meanwhile, the Isles got goals from Jordan Eberle, Anders Lee, Josh Bailey, and Anthony Beauvillier.

Semyon Varlamov stopped 24 of the 26 shots he saw while his counterpart Braden Holtby stopped 23 of the 27 he saw.

INJURY REPORT

The Islanders will still be without Johnny Boychuk in Game 2. He’s been out since Game 1 against the Florida Panthers in the play-in round. Ross Johnston will also not be playing today, though he’s not injured.

On the other side of the ice, the Capitals will be without Nicklas Backstrom, who is in concussion protocol. He was injured early in the first period back in Game 1 and did not return on the ice after the first intermission. That’s a significant loss for the Capitals. However, they will be getting Lars Eller back.

STARTING GOALTENDERS

No changes in net for either team. The Islanders will be sticking with Semyon Varlamov as their starting goaltender. Thomas Greiss will serve as his backup. Meanwhile, Braden Holtby will get the nod in net for the Capitals. Rookie netminder Vitek Vanecek will be his backup goalie.
