NHL trade rumors: Top 4 teams who should trade for Johnny Gaudreau
2. New Jersey Devils
Sometimes, it’s good to come home. Johnny Gaudreau was born and raised in New Jersey and if he’s available, I’d be shocked if the New Jersey Devils weren’t interested in him. Gaudreau would be a perfect linemate for Jack Hughes, who had a rough rookie season but is still immensely talented.
It’s been a while since the Devils have been able to consistently score goals. They were above-average in 2017-18, but just barely, ranking 14th out of 31 teams. Before that, you have to go all the way back to the 2011-12 season to find a Devils team that finished in the top 15 in goals scored.
The Devils lack elite talent, so getting someone like Gaudreau would be huge. He’s one of the most consistent point producers in the league. The Devils are rebuilding their image, steadily acquiring and inserting faster, quicker players into their lineup. Gaudreau would be a perfect fit, as he’s one of the fastest and quickest players in the entire NHL.
New Jersey has what the Flames are probably looking for in a Gaudreau trade – defense. They also have three first-round picks, which is tempting. It will probably take Damon Severson plus a first-round pick to get Gaudreau, but it would be worth it for the Devils.
