Pierre McGuire has emerged as a general manager candidate for the Arizona Coyotes.

The Arizona Coyotes have had a turbulent two months. They lost general manager John Chayka just before the playoffs, as he stepped down from his role. Next, the Coyotes lost to the Colorado Avalanche in five games, embarrassing themselves in the process. On top of that, the Coyotes are facing punishments for illegally scouting prospects.

Arizona’s moving quickly on their search for their next general manager. Several names have emerged, including a very interesting one.

According to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, Pierre McGuire’s name has come up. He has had several conversations with their organization about the role and has also reportedly been interviewed for the position.

Another name that has emerged is Jason Karmanos, the son of Hockey Hall of Famer Peter Karmanos. Jason currently serves as an assistant general manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Currently, McGuire works for NBC as an analyst and broadcaster.

McGuire has an encyclopedic knowledge of hockey prospects. However, it’s fair to say he’s a questionable general manager candidate at best for several reasons.

First of all, McGuire has no experience as a general manager in the NHL. In fact, he only has one year of experience as an assistant general manager, as he served in that role for the Hartford Whalers back in 1993-94. The Coyotes need someone with real front office experience. Not someone who hasn’t been in an NHL front office in nearly 30 years.

Secondly, McGuire’s background in hockey isn’t that great. He used to be the head coach of the Whalers. To say his tenure there was disastrous would be a huge understatement. There’s a reason McGuire hasn’t had an NHL job since 1996.

Nothing McGuire has done in his career suggests he would be a good general manager. Having met him in real life, he’s a heck of a nice guy and passionate about what he does. McGuire genuinely loves hockey. He went online to find a huge group of people watching hockey in DC! As far as people go, Pierre’s weird, but really nice! But he shouldn’t even get an interview for the Coyotes vacancy.
