1. Calgary Flames

Currently, the Calgary Flames only have Rasmus Andersson signed on the right side of their blueline. T.J. Brodie and Travis Hamonic are both free agents. If they re-sign either of them, I don’t think trading for Matt Dumba makes sense because then they’d have three expensive right-handed options.

But if the Flames decide to part ways with Brodie and Hamonic, suddenly, Dumba would make a ton of sense for the Flames. He’s from Calgary and it’s always nice to bring players back home. Dumba is a legitimate top-four defenseman even if he isn’t completely healthy. And if he is, well, the Flames would have a nice replacement for Brodie next to Mark Giordano.

The Flames also have what the Wild want – Sean Monahan. Minnesota needs to add a high-end center who can make plays. Monahan fits that description perfectly. With a $6.375 million cap hit for the next three seasons, the finances make sense too (Dumba makes $6 million a year for the next three seasons).

I think the Wild would have to add more, but a Dumba plus a pick or high-end prospect for Monahan trade would make so much sense for both the Wild and the Flames. Hockey trades are becoming more rare in today’s NHL, but maybe the flat salary cap will motivate teams to start making them again.
