Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have several things on their offseason “to do” list. On top of it is improving their wing depth. Connor McDavid, despite what many think about Leon Draisaitl, is the best darn player in the world. There’s no reason why the best player in the world’s most common right wing at 5v5 during the postseason should be Josh Archibald.
I mean no disrespect to Archibald – he’s a decent player and he’s proven he’s an NHL-caliber forward. But ideally, you want someone with more than 21 points in 61 games playing next to McDavid. One has to imagine acquiring a top-six right wing is on top of the Oilers checklist for this offseason. Palmieri would be a perfect fit.
Firstly, while Palmieri isn’t as fast as McDavid (in fairness, who is?) he’s still pretty fast. More importantly, Palmieri can make plays at his top speed. When you play with McDavid, that’s a must. Palmieri would give McDavid a legitimate sniper on his right side. It wouldn’t surprise me if Palmieri set a career-high in goals scored if he gets a full 82 game season with McDavid.
The Oilers also need to address their defense and add a goaltender, but if they’re looking for an upgrade at right wing, it’s hard to find a better bargain as far as cap hit than Palmieri. While the Devils are rightfully going to want a significant return for him, the Oilers have enough pieces to put one together.
