According to the latest NHL rumors, the Dallas Stars are hoping to re-sign goaltender Anton Khudobin.

The Dallas Stars surprised everyone by making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final before eventually losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games. They did this despite losing starting goaltender Ben Bishop, who only played in one game during the postseason. The Stars turned to backup Anton Khudobin, who proceeded to carry the team to the Stanley Cup Final. According to the latest NHL rumors, the Stars are trying to re-sign him.

Khudobin will be a free agent soon, but to nobody’s surprise, the Stars are trying to re-sign their postseason hero. In Pierre LeBrun his latest column from The Athletic, LeBrun talked to Khudobin’s agent. His agent, Kent Hughes, said he plans to talk to the Stars about Khudobin coming back.

Before the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Khudobin had a whopping total of zero postseason wins in his career. He went on the run of his life, winning 14 of the 25 games he played in with a .917% save percentage. That save percentage was quite a bit higher before facing the Lightning, too.

The Stars currently have $15,491,302 of cap space, according to CapFriendly. They have to re-sign or replace several free agents, including Corey Perry, Radek Faksa, Roope Hintz, Mattias Janmark, and Denis Gurianov. Gurianov in particular could be expensive thanks to his spectacular postseason.

Khudobin will likely be looking for one last good deal, as he’s 34 years old. He has spent his last two seasons in Dallas. During the regular season in 2019-20, Khudobin posted a .930% save percentage, the highest save percentage of any goalie with at least 25 games played.

The Stars would love to keep him around because he’s an important part of their team. Plus, wish Bishop’s heath concerns, having a top-notch backup goalie is a must. Khudobin is very comfortable in his role, so it’s understandable the Stars would love to keep him around.

Because the Stars are very much a “win now” team, they likely don’t share the same concerns about Khudobin’s age that other teams might have. A reunion makes all the sense in the world for both sides. It’ll be interesting to see how much Khudobin’s next deal will pay him should the Stars re-sign him.
