Columbus Blue Jackets acquire Max Domi from the Montreal Canadiens
Just before the 2020 NHL Draft, the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets made a blockbuster trade.
Max Domi has been seemingly on the move out of Montreal since he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens from the Arizona Coyotes. Tuesday before the draft the move finally came to fruition. Domi was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Josh Anderson and a 2020 third-round draft pick.
In Domi’s five seasons he has only made one playoff appearance, and that was in the expanded COVID cup playoff tournament. Now Domi is with an organization that has qualified for the playoffs in four straight seasons are appear to be on the rise with young players like Pierre-Luc Dubois, Alexandre Texier, and Zach Werenski. Not to mention veterans like Seth Jones and Nick Foligno.

Domi had an outstanding rookie campaign with Arizona in 2015-2016 totaling over 50 points. His best season came with Montreal in 2018-2019 where he scored 28 goals and totaled 72 points. Domi has been an inspirational story, and to lesser importance, very durable despite having been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of twelve.
As for Montreal and their roster addition of Josh Anderson. Anderson was a junior hockey teammate of Domi on the London Knights in the OHL.
He was a fourth-round-pick in 2012 for Columbus and has spent his whole career there so far.
Anderson’s best pro season came in 2018-2019 where the right-winger scored 27 goals for a total of 47 points. Anderson was plagued by injuries last season and did not make an appearance in the 2019-2020 playoffs.
Rumors surrounding both players have always been about adding some toughness and grit to other teams. Here the swap may very well be about a change of scenery as well as money available for each organization. Both Anderson and Domi were given qualifying offers to re-sign with their original teams before being traded. With the trade, that status travels with the player so both are still unsigned restricted free agents.
After the trade Columbus has about $7 million in cap space while Montreal has about $11 million in cap space. Though both teams must re-sign the player they received since they’re both RFAs. Neither team is close to done with making offseason moves. Not only do we have the draft but the free agency period does not officially begin until October 9th at noon eastern time.
