Tyson Jost has accepted his qualifying offer from the Colorado Avalanche.

On October 19, the Colorado Avalanche got the news that forward Tyson Jost accepted his qualifying offer, worth $874,125 for one year. Jost’s contract is a one-way contract so his salary is guaranteed no matter what.

Jost was originally selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. The Avalanche had hoped that he would become a top-six forward but that hasn’t happened. It’s safe to say he has been a disappointment to some degree but you can fully blame him for not shooting up the depth chart as the team has an array if talented forwards.

He could possibly play on the left wing behind Brandon Sadd on the third forward line. Jost has played in three NHL season, all with the Avs.  He has been a consistent depth forward who has put up over 20 points in each season.

Jost has scored a total 32 goals and 40 assists for a total of 72 points. Even though the forward hasn’t been a superstar at the NHL level, it is safe to say that he is still a valuable piece for a contending team, which is what Colorado is.

What makes Jost a valuable asset is his ability to play a solid two-way game. Jost is especially good on the defensive side of the puck. Over the course of his young career, Jost has totaled 142 hits. Possibly he could also create more opportunities for takeaways if given more playing time.

After the team got upset by the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Semi-final, general manager Joe Sakic made it a priority to keep intact the teams’ core, including the depth pieces. Sakic has completed that objective after with this acquisition. He also brought back Andre Burakovsky, Valeri Nichushkin and Ryan Graves.

Jost was a restricted free agent heading into this offseason. His new contract is more of a “prove it” deal. While keeping their core intact, Sakic is also trying to see is there is any upside left in the once promising player.

The best moment of his career so far has been a hat-trick in Amalie Arena against the eventual Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. That was last season but unfortunately that was nearly half of his total goal scoring for last year. He scored 8 total goals last season. The Avalanche will find out soon enough is he can improve his offensive output and contribute to a potential Stanley Cup Finals run.
