It was quite a day for NHL and ESPN fans on Wednesday.

Yes, after a prolonged break from each other, the NHL announced in a statement yesterday that they were joining forces once again with ESPN in a blockbuster seven-year, U.S. television, streaming and media rights deal.

The new partnership will come into effect just in time for the 2021-22 NHL season, and will run through the 2027-28 season. It marks the first time since 2004 that the National Hockey League and the ESPN have worked together.

It is a hugely significant deal for the NHL in more ways than one and, while we will break it down in full elsewhere, there was no doubt that the reunion between ESPN and the NHL went down incredibly well with fans when you study social media.

Because, not only should ESPN help to get the NHL brand out to a much-bigger audience and increase the game’s exposure, we were also treated to the news that an incredibly popular component of the previous deal between the two parties would be returning.

Return of “NHL on ESPN” theme song the good news we all needed in 2021

Yes, that’s right, the famous and iconic “NHL on ESPN” theme song will be making a spectacular return and that simply brilliant tune was being played in all corners of Twitter and other social media platforms throughout Wednesday in the wake of the big news.

I mean, I think most hockey fans get goosebumps when the start of that song kicks in, and you instantly know what is coming when you hear the first few beloved notes, and it just invokes so many good memories for so many different people.

First introduced in 1992 as the theme on ESPN’s National Hockey Night, that theme has been the backdrop for a plethora of incredible moments in the rich history of the National Hockey League, and many fans associate the music with the fondest of memories.

For many of us the theme song was what we grew up with watching hockey, and it just resonates in a different way given all of the wide-ranging emotions that it invokes. Ask any NHL fan and they will no doubt have a story when it comes to the NHL on ESPN theme.

And, how can you beat a stunning piece of music that was played over highlights of Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux strutting their stuff?? You just can’t and the whole theme is perfect for what the game of hockey is all about.

As a result, the news that the iconic theme music will be making a return as part of the new deal between ESPN and NHL is literally sweet music to the ears of hockey fans the world over, and I for one can’t wait until my ears first hear that oh so catchy tune on our TV screens again very, very soon.
