It has been a quiet start to the day but, in truth, we are still getting over an incredibly busy day in the NHL on Sunday when a number of huge trades went down, including the Boston Bruins acquiring forward Taylor Hall from the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins signalling their intention to go for it yet again after trading for veteran center Jeff Carter from the LA Kings.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were perhaps the busiest team after dealing for Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nick Foligno and Calgary Flames goaltender David Rittich, while the Montreal Canadiens traded for veteran defenseman Jon Merrill from the Detroit Red Wings.
We also saw some significant trades go down on Saturday as the Tampa Bay Lightning worked with the Detroit Red Wings to ensure that they were able to make a deal for Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman David Savard work, the Colorado Avalanche got some goalie help in Devan Dubnyk and the Buffalo Sabres firesale continued with defenseman Brandon Montour being dealt to the Florida Panthers.
There are still a number of players that could be moved today, as we mapped out here, and it is possible that there could be a couple of surprise moves that leave us all stunned because, after all, this is the NHL Trade Deadline and anything can happen, especially this year.

2021 NHL Trade Deadline Trade Tracker
April 12
The 2021 NHL Trade Deadline has now passed and it was somewhat quiet, certainly lacking in the fireworks that we saw on Sunday. Thank you for following along and we’ll have a full breakdown of all the moves made over the coming days!
As is always the case, there are some late deals trickling through so we’re going to quickly run through all of them here…
This is without doubt the biggest trade of the day as the Washington Capitals get a player in Anthony Mantha who can help them to win a Stanley Cup now, while the Detroit Red Wings get two players who can help their young roster in addition to two high Draft picks that will considerably help their rebuild. Both teams win here.
The Winnipeg Jets beef up their blueline with the addition of Jordie Benn, but will it be enough? Only time will tell.
This was somewhat of a surprising one for the Anaheim Ducks.
The Vegas Golden Knights get some forward help, although it does seem somewhat of an overpay when you consider what the Boston Bruins sent the Buffalo Sabres for Taylor Hall.
We have had one late trade and that is the news that the
There are some late trades starting to trickling through with the Florida Panthers reportedly acquiring forward Sam Bennett from the Calgary Flames, while the Montreal Canadiens are trading for defenseman Erik Gustafsson from the Philadelphia Flyers.
We’ll have more on this once both deals are confirmed.
We’re in the final hour of the NHL Trade Deadline and another player is off the board as forward Scott Laughton signs a five-year contract extension with the Philadelphia Flyers, worth $3 million per year.
Not all trades are exciting, and that has been proved time and time again today.
There will be no trade for forward Alex Iafallo who has signed a four-year, $16 million deal to remain with the Los Angeles Kings.
The contract runs through the 2024-25 season and carries an Average Annual Value of $4 million.
We’ve got a few more trades to talk about…
I mean, we’re here for the name of that goalie the San Jose Sharks have just acquired. Just wow.
I like this addition for the Edmonton Oilers, they get a nice depth defenseman who can add some toughness and grit to that backend without giving up too much. Nice work by General Manager Ken Holland.
We now have confirmation of the first trade of the day:
Not a trade to get particularly excited about as the Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks basically swap depth forwards.
Let’s hope for some more moves as the day goes on.
We finally have some movement today!
It comes courtesy of the waiver wire, however, as the Dallas Stars claim defenseman Sami Vatanen from the New Jersey Devils, and the Ottawa Senators have claimed Victor Mete.
Also, Kevin Weekes, who is an analyst for the NHL Network, is reporting that the Edmonton Oilers could be acquiring defenseman Dmitry Kulikov from the New Jersey Devils for a Draft pick. Watch this space.
Still very, very quiet as we approach noon.
There isn’t any movement on Trade Deadline Day as of yet, although it is still very early so don’t be surprised if things pick up sooner rather than later.
As we mentioned above, there is still a lot of movement that can happen with a lot of intriguing names still on the board, and it takes just one domino to fall for the rest to follow and that could certainly be the case today.
In the meantime, scroll down for a recap of what went down over the weekend and beyond…
The LA Kings are also retaining 50 percent of Jeff Carter’s salary, while the Pittsburgh Penguins get a proven and experienced center who knows what it takes to win championships, and he will greatly improve their depth down the middle while taking some of the pressure off Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
This is a huge win-win for the Boston Bruins. While Taylor Hall has struggled this season with just 19 points (2 G, 17 A) in 37 games for the Sabres, the talent is there and he could really explode on that second-line for the B’s because he will be surrounded by much better talent.
Also, the Sabres are retaining 50 percent of Hall’s $8 million salary this season yet they are getting just a Second-Round pick and a player in Anders Bjork who has struggled in the NHL in return, which doesn’t seem like a lot at all.
The New York Islanders get yet more veteran help.
With Frederik Andersen still unhealthy, the Toronto Maple Leafs make a smart move to bolster their goaltending and add an insurance policy in David Rittich, who does have some postseason experience and will be able to ease the load on Jack Campbell.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were busy on Sunday and they added a real tough and gritty presence in forward Nick Foligno, who will add some leadership and experience to that room which could prove invaluable come postseason time.
The Columbus Blue Jackets retain 50 percent of Foligno’s contract while the Sharks were included to retain 25 percent, allowing the Maple Leafs to get this one done.
Jon Merrill has been pretty damn good for the Detroit Red Wings this season with a +2 rating in 36 games, and he’ll provide the Montreal Canadiens with some vital depth on the backend.
This was one heck of a trade. The Tampa Bay Lightning, who are set to get a fully healthy Nikita Kucherov back for the postseason, somehow managed to add to an already loaded blueline unit by adding David Savard from the Columbus Blue Jackets, with General Manager Julien BrisBois working some more salary cap magic by working with the Detroit Red Wings and former boss Steve Yzerman to get this done.
Don’t be surprised if the Lightning repeat as Cup Champions this year.
The Colorado Avalanche are looking like an absolute juggernaut right now but, knowing their unlucky history with injuries, they made a smart move here by adding some goalie insurance in the form of veteran Devan Dubnyk, and they didn’t have to give up a whole lot either.
And the Buffalo Sabres’ expected fire sale continues…
The Toronto Maple Leafs are busy loading up ahead of what they hope will finally be a deep postseason run this year.
As we mapped out here, this was clearly a move by the Florida Panthers to try and clear some salary ahead of a potential big move, while the Chicago Blackhawks get two prospects with high upside and a proven NHL goalscorer in Brett Connolly, so you can say this was a win-win for both teams.
This was a home run of a deal by New York Islanders General Manager in Lou Lamoriello, who significantly bolstered his roster by adding a proven goalscorer in Kyle Palmieri, in addition to adding a real nice depth piece in Travis Zajac who should be a perfect fit in that room. Nice work all round.
The LA Kings get a gritty forward in Brendan Lemieux who can certainly protect their younger players, while the New York Rangers add yet more Draft capital to their arsenal.
This was a no-brainer move for the Montreal Canadiens, who acquire a veteran center in Eric Staal who can play up and down the lineup, on the power play and on the penalty kill and his experience will be vital in the postseason.
This wasn’t a bad return for the Buffalo Sabres, either.
This is smart by the Colorado Avalanche who get yet more goalie insurance, which you can’t have too much of when it comes to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
A straight player-for-player swap here.
