Three Reasons The New York Rangers Should Trade For Max Domi
The New York Rangers are in need of some help with their depth before a playoff run. This team needs to add some help but definitely doesn’t need to overpay to go all in this playoff run. One interesting name would be Max Domi.
The Rangers are built to be competitive this season. While this might not be their year to go all-in on a championship, they are going to be in the playoffs and definitely want to make some noise.
Trying to add a few more players is the right move for the New York Rangers, and one name they should be aware of is Max Domi with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Jackets have lost a lot of big-name players in the post during the offseason. One example is on the Rangers currently in Artemi Panarin. The Jackets definitely do not want to see an asset like Domi walk away during the offseason, they would rather bring back some return compared to no return.
The Rangers are going to want to booster their depth ahead of the deadline. An addition or two to the bottom six definitely wouldn’t hurt the team and could help them out in the playoffs. Here are three reasons the team should trade for Max Domi.
1. The Added Depth
Max Domi has a good shot, has speed, and can play physical hockey. The Rangers would be lucky to add a piece like that into their bottom six to play alongside guys like Filip Chytil.
The Rangers’ current third line of Drydant Hunt, Filip Chytil, and Julien Gauthier have a combined 11 goals on the season. The depth scoring could definitely be better for this team, and adding a guy like Domi would definitely help out. Domi would be a great addition to the line and could allow the team to reshuffle things a bit.
Depth scoring is huge during the playoffs. The minute a guy like Chris Kreider stops scoring this team will fall apart, they need to get more guys involved offensively, and one way to do that would be adding a guy like Domi in a trade.
The Rangers need to make sure they are prepared for an injury or two in the postseason, and Domi is someone they can use up and down in their lineup in the postseason is someone gets hurt.
2. The Low Cost
Max Domi is not having the best season. He has put up 24 points in 39 games but has missed some time with injuries. His best season had to be in 2018-19 when he scored 28 goals for the Canadiens.
Considering his shaky play and the fact that his contract is so large, the Blue Jackets probably won’t be able to pull in as big of an ask as they would like for Domi. They are going to be desperate to move him if they feel as if he is not going to re-sign in the offseason.
This is a situation where the Rangers can take advantage of a team that is going to lose a player and will want to get some asset back compared to none in the offseason. Domi is a versatile player that can be a great addition to the Rangers, and oh yeah the Rangers have the cap room to add him.
3. The Rangers Have The Cap Room
The Rangers are one of a few teams with cap space right now. Out of the teams actually competing for the playoffs, only the Nashville Predators has more cap space according to CapFriendly.
This team has 6.7 million to work with right now. Domi currently carries a cap hit of 5.3 million and is set to be a free agent at the end of this season. Few teams are going to be able to make a trade work when looking at the cap hit that Domi is carrying. The Rangers are one of those teams that can.
Assuming Domi does not plan to re-sign with the Blue Jackets, they are going to be looking to move him. Finding a team that can take on his salary and provide an asset back the other way like a second-round pick has to be something the Blue Jackets would like.
The Rangers are not going to have to overpay on Domi, they won’t have to give up too much and will have a solid depth addition for the postseason. Domi has nine goals on the season and has missed some time with injuries, assuming he is healthy for the postseason this is a nice addition to the third line for a playoff run.
Domi can play physically and provide a spark to the Rangers, he fits well with the roster they have built and would definitely add to the team before the playoffs. I think this would be a great match for the Rangers and the Blue Jackets.
