The Boston Bruins need all the help they can get to keep their contending team alive in the coming seasons. After a brief rebuild a few years ago, it looks like the team could be heading towards another rebuild again depending on some of the moves they make this offseason.
The Boston Bruins extending Jake DeBrusk on a two-year deal through the 2023-24 season worth 4 million dollars a season. At the time of the extension, the trade deadline was about to take place and it looked like the team was extending DeBrusk to trade him away for a higher value considering he wouldn’t be a rental. Yet a trade never occurred and Debrusk was one of the team’s best players the remainder of the season and during the playoffs.
He put up 25 goals and 42 points through 77 games with the Bruins this past season and during the playoffs, he added two goals and two assists in seven games. He played more than Taylor Hall on average this postseason.
DeBrusk asked for a trade this postseason but maybe he will return for another chance with this team considering how well he performed at the back end of the season.
He has a deal in place and an opportunity to take on a big role with the team considering guys like Patrice Bergeron might not be back next season. Jake DeBrusk was a really good forward on this team and he is only 25 years old. He has a lot of good hockey ahead of him.
The former 2015 first-round pick could choose to ask for a trade from the Bruins this offseason, or he can play out his contract and see where he and the team go from here.
DeBrusk finished the season playing with guys like Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. You cannot ask for a better situation than that. This team is up against the cap and DeBrusk is on a relatively good deal considering how good he has been this season. If the Bruins want to be back in the playoffs next year despite how tough their division is going to be they are going to need more guys like Jake DeBrusk on their roster.
