Hurricanes Acquire Burns, Pederson from Sharks in Free Agent Day Deal
The Carolina Hurricanes acquired veteran leadership, toughness, and skill all in one move, acquiring defenseman Brent Burns and forward Lane Pederson from the San Jose Sharks.
In exchange, the new General Manager Mike Grier and the Sharks add forward Steven Lorentz, goaltender Eetu Makiniemi, and a conditional 2023 third-round pick. The Sharks also announced they will retain 34% of Burns’ salary.
This trade coincides with defenseman Tony DeAngelo signing with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Hurricanes needed another defenseman to fill that void, and they found just that with Burns.
The 2017 Norris Trophy winner, Burns has been a consistent player his entire career. Drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the first round (20th overall) in the 2003 NHL Draft, he initially played forward then switched to defense.
After 7 years in Minnesota, he was dealt to the Sharks on June 24, 2011, and remained there until yesterday. Last season in San Jose, Burns posted10 goals and 44 assists for 54 points in 82 games played. In his career, Burns has 227 goals and 550 assists for 777 points in 1,251 games.
The Hurricanes have acquired Brent Burns from the Sharks.
Lane Pederson signed as a free agent with the Arizona Coyotes, then was traded to the Sharks on July 28, 2021. Primarily a depth forward with speed and skill, he registered 2 assists in 29 games last season and has 1 goal and 4 assists for 5 points in 44 career games.
Steven Lorentz was drafted by Carolina in the 7th round (186th overall) in the 2015 NHL draft. Last season for Carolina, Lorentz recorded 8 goals and 5 assists for 13 points in 67 games. His career totals are 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points in 112 games.
Eetu Makiniemi was a 2017 4th-round draft pick of Carolina (104th). At 6-foot-2 and 183 pounds, he is a big goaltender who sees the play well, is very athletic, and has good rebound control.
Last season for the AHL Chicago Wolves, he posted an 11-2-1 record, with a 2.06 GAA, and a .922 save percentage.
With Burns being the big fish in the trade, both teams come out of this trade getting something they needed. Will it lead either team to the Stanley Cup Finals? We do not know as of yet, but these teams got more competitive with this deal.
