San Jose Sharks officially name David Quinn their new head coach
The San Jose Sharks officially welcomed in their new head coach as David Quinn has been named the tenth head coach in the history of the franchise. Before this, Quinn served as coach of the New York Rangers.
The San Jose Sharks announced on Tuesday that David Quinn will be their new head coach.
It was rumored for the past week that Quinn would be heading to San Jose, but until things are official nothing is ever set in stone. Quinn has experience not just in the NHL, but coaching at the college level and at the international stage.
While he might have only been with the Rangers for three seasons, new general manager Mike Grier does not seem to be worried about inexperience with the Sharks’ new head coach.
“David has successfully coached at several different levels in his hockey career, including with Team USA on the international stage at the Olympics and leading the team at the World Championships to the Bronze Medal game,” said Grier. “His experience in developing young players as a head coach at Boston University and at the NHL level over the last few seasons has proven to be effective.”
Quinn coached the New York Rangers for three seasons and during that time he put up a record of 96-97-25 good for a .522 point percentage with the Rangers. He was with the team during their retool, and at the end of his time with the team, they were just about ready to turn the corner as they did this past season.
The San Jose Sharks have had a busy offseason saying goodbye to their coaching staff and a lot of their management after missing the postseason for the third year in a row – a first for the franchise.
While the team did say goodbye to Brent Burns this offseason, the core group of Tomas Hertl, Logan Couture, Timo Meier and Erik Karlsson are still on the roster, along with some newcomers like Oskar Lindblom. This Sharks team definitely has a lot of time ahead of them before they will be back in the playoffs, but for now at least they have a good voice behind the bench ready for the 2022-23 season.
