Top three hockey movies to watch as we wait for the 2022-23 NHL season
The NHL season starts in October, which means fans have a lot of time ahead of them to wait for games.
We have not had an NHL hockey game to watch since June 26th, when the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup against the Tampa Bay Lightning in game six. We are about a month and a half removed from the end of the season and still have a month and a half to go until next season.
With all that in mind, I thought it would be fun to look at a few hockey movies that everyone should watch.
I will be honest, there are not a lot of great hockey movies out there. Goon almost made this list considering the few hockey movies available to pick from. Football and baseball have an endless repertoire of movies to pick from, and hockey doesn’t have the biggest library.
Let’s jump in with the first movie hockey fans should watch this summer:
– Miracle
Miracle stars Kurt Russell as coach Herb Brooks. The movie follows the 1980 U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team as they try to win a gold medal.
The movie, directed by Gavin O’connor, is a true story and has some amazing camera work done on ice. . While there are not a lot of hockey movies out there, this sports movie is not just a top hockey film, it is one of the best sports movies of all time.
– The Mighty Ducks
The Mighty Ducks released in 1992 with their first movie following a Minneapolis attorney who has to do his community service coaching a peewee hockey team. Emilio Estevez stars as attorney turned hockey coach Gordon Bombay.
This is a great underdog story which has led to a heck of a lot of spin offs. Disney made two more Mighty Ducks movies, as well as a new series streaming on Disney Plus. The Anaheim Ducks came into the NHL as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim based off of this movie.
– Slap Shot
The last movie all hockey fans should watch comes with a warning right off the top. The 1977 hockey movie Slap Shot is rated R.
Slap Shot follows a minor league hockey team in Charlestown, the Chiefs. Player/coach Reggie Dunlop, played by Paul Newman, spends the movie trying to make the team relevant again and tries to find out who owns the Chiefs.
This movie has some great one liners for adult hockey fans, but really it might not be appropriate for all audiences.
