The time has come for the Dallas Stars to pay Jason Robertson
The Dallas Stars have not re-signed their young star Jason Robertson to a new contract. Even with plenty of time to get a deal done this offseason, Robertson will miss the start of Stars training camp as he awaits his next contract.
The Dallas Stars have had all offseason to work on a deal for Robertson. While both sides have been talking, the contracts signed in Dallas include 38-year-old Joe Pavelski’s one-year 5.5 million dollar deal. Maybe if the team kept some of that money around for their 23-year-old 40-goal scorer, they would not be in this position today.
The time has come for the Dallas Stars to pay Jason Robertson
The Dallas Stars have just over six million in cap space to work with on a Robertson deal. For a guy who just put up 41 goals, I do not know if that is enough to get him signed on a bridge deal, nor should it when looking around the league.
The issue is that Dallas has a lot of money tied up in the wrong players. Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin make over 9.5 million each, and neither has been worth that money the past few seasons. Guys like Robertson are now being put in a bad position to not take the money they deserve because of the organization’s mistakes.
Robertson has put up 125 points in 128 games with the Stars over the course of his two-year career thus far. He led the team in goals last season with 41, and if this team wants to get back into the playoffs, they will need Robertson.
The team finally got Jake Oettinger signed at the start of September, but they are still struggling to get Robertson signed. The team drastically needs both of those guys on the ice this season.
Missing training camp is not ideal, especially for a young player like Robertson hoping to hit another level after a great season in 2021-22. The Stars start their season on Oct. 13 against the Predators and hopefully, Robertson will be in the lineup.
