For over a decade, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals has been one of the faces of the National Hockey League. It has been so much fun to watch, and he is becoming the gift that keeps on giving.

After Ovechkin and Washington won the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history in 2018, it has been so clearly about the number of goals that he is going to score in his NHL career. Of course, Wayne Gretzky is sitting at 894 career goals and Ovechkin is closing in on it.

On Wednesday, Ovechkin entered their game against the Philadelphia Flyers with 793 career goals. With some big milestones coming up, it is getting very exciting right now.

He ended up scoring an empty net goal late in the game to get him up to 794 career goals. It was a cool moment as he got himself 100 goals away from tying the all-time record.

Alex Ovechkin continues to climb the all-time goal-scoring ladder.

The even cooler thing is that he added another empty netter to get within 99 goals of the record and 100 away from breaking it. He is clearly a man with eyes on the prize.

At 795 goals, he now only needs five goals to be the third player to ever reach the 800-goal plateau. It is sure to be a very special moment in his career.

One goal later, 801, will tie Gordie Howe for the second-most all-time, which is something to be very proud of as well. Any time you get within the same company as Gordie Howe, you know things are going well for you. He needs six to tie that and seven to break it.

You can expect Ovechkin to do that sometime around the new year which will be really fun. As mentioned before, we are getting to the point where he is must-see TV because of all these milestones.

Can Ovechkin actually break Gretzky’s long-time goal record? Well, of course he can. He is 37 years old and has a few more years left on his current contract with the Washington Capitals. The Stanley Cup is already in his pocket so he can focus on this if he wants to.

He can get 20 goals in each of the next four years and break the record with ease. He should be able to score a lot more than that though, which is the fun part. When he finally breaks the record, it will be one of the biggest sports stories of all time. 99 more.
