The Detroit Red Wings have made some excellent moves under general manager Steve Yzerman. One move that definitely deserves some praise involved an offseason signing that Yzerman made this past summer.
One contract on the Red Wings that is an absolute steal
This past summer, the Detroit Red Wings signed Dominik Kubalik to a two-year $5 million dollar contract with an AAV of $2.5 million. The deal would bring a former 30-goal scorer to Detroit to play with some of the Wings’ best talent.
Before signing in Detroit, Kubalik was drafted in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL draft by the Los Angeles Kings. He was then traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, where he started his career in 2019-20, putting up 30 goals in 68 games and being a finalist for the Calder Trophy.
Kubalik spent three years in Chicago before the Hawks let him walk in free agency to join the Red Wings. At the age of 27, he still has a lot of great hockey ahead of him.
Since joining the Red Wings, Kubalik has been a really good addition to the top six. He has 25 points, second most on the team, and has been setting up great plays like this goal below from back in October.
The Detroit Red Wings are making a real push for the playoffs this year. They have a record of 13-10-6 as of this writing and are contending with some of the best teams around. Having Kubalik on their roster is only making them better.
Dominik Kubalik is signed at great value through the end of next season. While it does hurt to see him hit free agency at the same time as guys like Michael Rasmussen, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider, it is pretty great that Steve Yzerman managed to get him signed on such a good deal.
It will be interesting to see whether or not Kubalik re-signs in Detroit. The aforementioned players above are all going to command a lot of money, so it could be hard to keep Kubalik on the roster. However, considering he is still only 27, Kubalik definitely has a lot of hockey ahead of him.
Hopefully, the Detroit Red Wings can take advantage of having Dominik Kubalik on a great contract over the next two years. Maybe this team could potentially win a playoff round or two during that time to help convince him to re-sign.
The Red Wings are back in action on Saturday, taking on the Ottawa Senators at 1 PM ET.
