The Edmonton Oilers won a tough fought game 5-4 in Arizona on Monday night. The game was filled with great moments for the Oilers, like Connor mcDavid registering his 140th point of the season, but another fun moment was Leon Draisaitl scoring his 300th career NHL goal.
Leon Draisaitl scored his 300th career NHL goal, doing so in just 630 NHL games.
Draisaitl scored his 46th goal of the season midway through the second period to give the Oilers a 4-2 lead over the Arizona Coyotes. He also resisted an assist in the third period and is riding a nine game point streak where he has put up 18 points.
Draisaitl has been putting up points and been an all-star for this team for a long time. This season there has only been one time where he did not register a point in two consecutive games. In fact, Draisaitl has played in 72 games this season and has only had 11 games without putting up a point.
Here is the highlight of Draisaitl’s 300th goal:
What a great shot from him there. He took a play that was kind of getting messy with blocked shots and passes and registered a goal from outside of the slot thanks to a nice screen in front. With the goal, Draisaitl also joins some elite company.
In the salary cap era, only four players have now registered 300 goals in 630 games or less, via Stathead. Draisaitl is one of those four, alongside Alex Ovechkin, Steven Stamkos and Sidney Crosby.
In their first 630 games, Ovechkin had scored 397 goals, Stamkos 338 and Crosby 302. So Draisaitl is right there with some of the best.
The Oilers are lucky to have Draisaitl on their team, and the fact that he is having a career year is amazing. He already has more points this season than when he won the Hart Trophy in 2020, and he is just four goals shy of 50 on the season. The reason that Draisaitl is flying under the radar here is the fact that his teammate, Connor McDavid is also playing off the charts.
On the same night that Draisaitl scores his 300th career goal, McDavid registered his 140th point of the season. Becoming just the 25th player in NHL history to register that many points in a season.
McDavid is the first player since 1995-96 to register at least 140 points as Mario Lemieux registered 161 that season. No matter how good Draisaitl is, at times he is outshined by McDavid.
The fact that Draisaitl just registered his 300th goal in just 630 games is pretty remarkable, but assuming McDavid scores another goal this season we are going to be talking about him scoring his 300th goal.
As of this writing McDavid sits at 299 goals in just 561 games. The Oilers have two of the best players in the world, constantly breaking records yet their matchup on Monday night against the Arizona Coyotes was a one goal game where the Oilers gave up four goals and gave up a two goal lead in the third period.
Edmonton is back in action on Tuesday night facing on the Vegas Golden Knights.
