Detroit Red Wings look to start strong in the 2023/2024 season

The full 2023/2024 NHL schedule was released on Tuesday, June 27th. Head Coach Derek Lalonde looks to push the Red Wings to a more promising season than they had last season as he enters year two behind the bench. The Red Wings did improve but the second half of the season is where things fell apart as they fell just short of a playoff berth. Detroit finished with a record of 35-37-20 for 80 points, which was good for seventh in the Atlantic Division.

Before the 2023/2024 NHL season starts, there will be preseason games. The preseason schedule starts in September with the Detroit Red Wings playing games against the Pittsburgh Penguins at home on the 26th, at the Washington capitals on the 28th, and against the Capitals on the 30th, The preseason concludes in October with five games total. Sunday, October 1st against the Chicago Blackhawks, Tuesday the 3rd against the same Blackhawks, Wednesday the fourth against the Penguins, Friday the 6th in Toronto against the Maple Leafs, and finishing up the preseason schedule on the 7th against the Maple Leafs.

The Red Wings start the new season in October, seeing Detroit play five road games and five home games, including three straight against the Calgary Flames (22nd), Seattle Kraken (24th), and Winnipeg Jets (26th). In November, Detroit plays 12 games, with eight of those games being played at home. November will see the Red Wings travel to Sweden to participate in the 2023 Global Series. Games will be played against the Senators on Thursday, November 16th and the Maple Leafs on Friday, November 17th

In January 2024, They end the month with five straight home games, including Tampa Bay (21st),  the Dallas Stars (23rd), the Philadelphia Flyers (25th), the Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights (27th), and division rivals, the Ottawa Senators (31st).

The Detroit Red Wings play six straight at home if you count the February part of the schedule, as they play the Vancouver Canucks on the 1st. Detroit then goes on a four-game road trip against the Edmonton Oilers (13th) , Canucks (15th), Flames (17th), and Kraken (19th). The Red Wings will then close out the 2023/2024 NHL season on Tuesday, April 16th against the Montreal Canadians.

With the new schedule being released, We truly do not know what to expect of this Detroit Red Wings team until the puck drops on opening night. Will last season’s  first-round draft pick, Marco Kaspar, be in the starting lineup on opening night? Who will general manager Steve Yzerman sign in free agency? Will Yzerman make any trades to upgrade the roster? After the start of last season, there is some optimism surrounding the team this season, with or without several moves. How big of a leap will the Detroit Red Wings make this season?
