The way last season ended for the Bruins was very disappointing but they are ready for bigger and better things starting now. With Patrice Bergeron retiring it is time for them to have a new captain in place.

Following in the footsteps of guys like Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Raymond Bourque, and others is not a very easy task for anyone. That is why they needed to make the perfect announcement.

On Wednesday, they did just that. The Bruins announced that Brad Marchand is going to be the next captain and team history. He is the 21st player to ever wear the “C” on a Boston Bruins sweater.

Marchand has been one of the best players the Bruins ever had and he was named as a top 100 player in team history as part of their centennial celebration. He has been everything they needed and more in his career.

He was so close to Patrice Bergeron both on and off the ice which makes him the perfect player to replace him as captain. He also lights up the score sheet on a nightly basis which makes it even easier to name him the captain.

It isn’t always your skills, however, they get you named captain of a team. Sometimes, you need someone who can lead by example and do what needs to be done to help his team win the game both on and off the ice. It is not easy to be an NHL captain but it appears that Brad Marchand has what it takes.

The Bruins named Marchand to be the captain through clever use of social media. It is the perfect way to announce it for Marchand because he is one of the most valuable personalities in the league. The guy enjoys having a good time when things are not serious.

You can bet that Marchand is going to be serious once the season begins though. As mentioned before, the Bruins had a terrible ending to the last season when they were defeated by the Florida Panthers in the first round. This came after having the best record in terms of wins and points in NHL history.

Some folks might have thought that Charlie McAvoy was going to be the next captain because he is a great young leader who also happens to be elite on the ice. While Brad Marchand is there though, it would’ve been hard for him not to be the captain. He has been there for a while and has the respect of the locker room.

Charlie McAvoy will be the captain of the team eventually and he will probably go on to be one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise. There’s no reason to rush and make him the captain now while Brad Marchand is sitting right there. This is the perfect match for the Bruins and they made a very smart decision.
