The Anaheim Ducks organization has been below standard for a few years now. Gone are the days of Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry leading them to playoff berth after playoff berth. They are waiting for the new group of faces to help them go far.

One of the leaders along the way is young forward Trevor Zegras. Of course, Zegras was Anaheim’s ninth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. Since coming into the NHL, he has been one of the most electric players.

Zegras hasn’t lit up the scoresheet like a superstar in terms of point totals just yet but he has been a pretty productive player. His best season was last year when he had 23 goals and 42 assists for 65 points in 81 games.

Again, those are above-average totals but he is far from being a superstar. The cool part about him is that with every shift he takes, he is capable of doing something spectacular. Almost all of his goals and assists that he has are highlight reel material.

The Anaheim Ducks and Trevor Zegras will have some great times together.

He scores using “The Michigan” on a regular basis and he can even flip the puck over the net for a teammate to bat in. Zegras has some of the most spectacular hands that you’ll ever see on a hockey player.

At the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, Zegras’ entry-level deal came to an end. Obviously, he was looking for a significant raise after becoming a star player in the NHL. He isn’t worthy of a contract worth too much money just yet but a good bridge deal was in order.

After a long summer of worrying about not getting it done, Anaheim Ducks fans can breathe a sigh of relief. They agreed on a three-year deal with Zegras to keep him a Duck for at least the duration of that contract. It is going to carry an average annual value of $5.75 million dollars.

This is a discount for Zegras based on his point production but he has the potential to make a lot of money in his career if he continues to develop well. If he can get over the hump to become a true superstar in the NHL, his contract will be closer to ten million than five.

Zegras needs to spend the next two years working hard to become that player. If he does, the Ducks won’t even let him reach free agency and pay him well before this contract expires. Knowing that he is going to set out to do that is great news for hockey fans. It is going to be a pleasure to watch.
