With the assistance of general manager Steve Yzerman, the Detroit Red Wings roster went through a makeover in the off-season. Instead of promoting young players and prospects, Yzerman decided to go a more experienced route.

In all, he added 20 fresh, new faces to the Red Wings team that should compete for a playoff spot this season.

With the roster now set and ready to go, one thing to be concerned about is how the roster was constructed as not one prospect or young player is on the team as of right now.

One would think that at least one of Detroit’s promising young players would have made the cut on a team that is still rebuilding.

The Detroit Red Wings have a lot of questions heading into the season.

While the American Hockey League affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins will be young but loaded, this decision to not have one prospect on the roster raises some eyebrows.

The roster as it stands has many of those off-season acquisitions on a one-year deal, which could make some room at season’s end for a young player to get some NHL ice time.

Forward Marco Kasper and defenseman Simon Edvinsson lead the list of probable call-ups if injuries should find the Red Wings roster again. With that said, below is the 2023-24 version of the Detroit Red Wings.

Forwards

14 Robby Fabbri, 18 Andrew Copp, 23 Lucas Raymond, 24 Klim Kostin, 27 Michael Rasmussen, 36 Christian Fischer, 57 David Perron, 71 Dylan Larkin, 88 Daniel Sprong, 90 Joe Veleno, 93 Alex DeBrincat

Defense

2 Olli Maatta, 3 Justin Holl, 8 Ben Chiarot, 41 Shayne Gostisbehere, 46 Jeff Petry, 53 Moritz Seider, 96 Jake Walman

Goaltenders

34 Alex Lyon, 35 Ville Husso, 47 James Reimer

The Detroit Red Wings kick off the 2023-24 season on Thursday, October 12 on the road against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. The first home game for Detroit will take place on Saturday, October 14 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

After this, the Red Wings take on the Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Ottawa Senators to complete the first five games of the brand-new season. Detroit will be tested right away as they face some bold competition, with the key match-up against their rival Senators.

A lot of pressure on both the Red Wings roster and Yzerman as they continue to push for a playoff spot. The rebuild has been going on for years now so is this the year they get it done and qualify for a wild card spot?

Will Debrincat be the offensive producer he has been or does he falter? Will Husso, Reimer, and Lyon get the job done between the pipes? Plenty of questions but a load of talent on this year’s roster. This should be an interesting year for the Detroit Red Wings from start to finish.
