Washington Capitals fans can breathe a sigh of relief today. Alexander Ovechkin isn’t waking up with a 0 next to his name in the goals department anymore. On Tuesday night during the NHL Frozen Frenzy, Ovechkin scored his first of the season in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The goal came in the final moments of the second period and the Capitals were already down 4-0. The 4-1 score would end up holding as the final as neither team added a tally in the 3rd period. The Capitals are now 1-3-1 which is the worst start they’ve had in a while.

Ovechkin can be happy though as he is finally on the sheet with a goal. It was the 823rd of his career. Of course, he is chasing down Wayne Gretzky’s career total of 894 which is the most in NHL history. He is currently second all-time and climbing.

This goal came on a Washington power play which means it was a historic goal. Ovechkin was already the NHL’s all-time leader in power-play goals and this one was his 300th. He can now say that he is the only player in NHL history to have 300 power-play goals. That is an amazing accomplishment.

Alex Ovechkin of the Washinton Capitals is truly a special player.

There is also another really cool wrinkle to all of this. Ovechkin scored the goal on Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll. He played amazingly in this game (was the number one star) but he allowed the goal to Ovechkin.

Woll is the 170th goalie that ever gave up a goal to Alexander Ovechkin. Only Jaromir Jagr (178) and Patrick Marleau (177) scored against more. It will be interesting to see if he can find twine against nine more unique goalies to break that record.

Ovechkin’s 300th career power-play goal is also the 3000th power-play goal in the history of the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin is a huge part of that number with all of those goals but also all of the assists that he has collected on the power play as well. He truly is extra special with the man advantage.

Again, the Capitals aren’t all that good anymore. They are far from the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2018 but they still have championship pedigree on their roster. Ovechkin is the leader of that. He wants this goal record and he is going to get it. Now that the first one was scored this season, the floodgates will open.
