Alex Ovechkin became the sixth player in NHL history to record 700 goals and 700 assists in an NHL career. The Capitals won the game by a score of 4-2 against the Vegas Golden Knights. There is no doubt that Ovechkin will be in the Hall of Fame, and he adds yet another milestone to his long list of achievements.
The other players in the "700-700" club include Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Phil Esposito, Marcel Dionne, and Jaromir Jagr. Ovechkin has already cemented himself as one of the best players of all time, and it seems the only record yet to achieve is the elusive all-time goal record, which he is 42 goals away from breaking.
No matter if you love or hate Ovechkin, you can't deny he's one of and soon will be the greatest goal scorer of all time. Nine 50 goal seasons, 700 career goals, and 700 career assists are numbers that you'll rarely ever see again.
The goal record might hold for one more year
Ovechkin's goal scoring took a dip last season. He still had 31, which is great, but it's the lowest number of goals he's scored in a full season since 2016-2017. He might have another 40-goal season in him, but don't count on it. It's more likely he stays around 30 again this season and breaks the record in the early portion of next year.
Ovechkin's goal scoring will always be the main talking point of his game. But now that he's at 700 assists, people should talk about him as one of the best passers to ever play the game as well. With his 700th assist last night, he became the 60th NHL player to tally that number in a career.
