The Columbus Blue Jackets were an interesting story during the 2024-25 season. Not long after the tragic accident that claimed the life of popular Blue Jackets forward, Johnny Gaudreau, Columbus wanted to dedicate the season to him. An incredible run almost landed them in the playoffs, and they fell only two points short.

Columbus hopes to replicate last season heading into the 2025-26 season but the lack of offseason moves have fans questioning the teams' focus.

Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell made some moves this offseason but it is hard to see the direction he wants the team to go. He signed defenseman Christian Jaros and center Isac Lundestrom for the upcoming season. Those were the only free agent signings he made.

He also acquired forwards Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood from the Colorado Avalanche and center Brendan Gaunce from the Minnesota Wild, helping with the forward depth. No major moves to speak of -- only moves to fill out the roster. These players make small differences but nothing elite about these moves upgrade the roster.

Columbus finished last season with a record of 40-33-9, finishing in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division. That left them only two points out of a wild card spot. While the regular season was a successful one that nobody saw coming, their finish left a sour taste in the fans' mouths. Expectations were high this offseason to upgrade the roster but the free agents were gone or looking for a big payday that the Blue Jackets could not match.

While they still Have Boone Jenner, Kirill Marchenko, Adam Fantilli, and Zack Werrenski, they are still outmatched talent-wise on most nights. They have skill at forward and defense, and their depth is solid enough to be there again this season. However, Waddell missed a great opportunity to take this team over the top.

A wild card spot is still within reach as the bottom of the Eastern Conerence is up for grabs. A lot of little things have to go right for them to make the playoffs this season. It is not out of the question but it may be a longer shot that most fans think.
