The Vancouver Canucks faced off in Dallas last night, they entered into the third period down by three goals after the Stars scored all on power plays throughout the first 40 minutes of play. Aatu Raty ended up drawing a cross-checking penalty at the end of the second period and Jake DeBrusk finally got the Canucks on the board.
Teddy Blueger then got high-sticked by Stars' Mason Marchment and Victor Mancini put in another power play goal, his first as a Canuck and second of the season/ NHL career, putting them within one.
After all five goals throughout the game so far had been on the power play and the Canucks finally got an opportunity to close in, the Dallas Stars got an even-strength goal, extending their lead in the final two minutes and 45 seconds left to go in the game.
When the Canucks pulled their goaltender Thatcher Demko, and the Stars scored on the empty net to extend their lead to 2 with just 2 minutes and 21 seconds left to go in regulation, most viewers on both teams probably thought the game was sealed.
Demko made his way back to his crease and with just one final minute left in regulation, the scoreboard showed 5-2 for the Stars. Aaty Raty got a goal to make it 5-3. Something that isn't so uncommon in the hockey world with late goals happening fairly often, the Stars still had a two-goal lead with one minute left of play.
Just 30 seconds later, Pius Suter would strike his 23rd goal of the season to put the Canucks within one. Fans and viewers of both teams probably had mixed feelings at that point, some might've thought that there were only 30 seconds left of play at that point and it's unheard of and not so common to cut a three-goal deficit in the final minute of play, yet the Canucks had just scored two within 30 seconds and anything can happen.
As the clock continued to wind down from there Canucks fans might've then realized there was no way to get an equalizer while some Stars fans might've breathed a sigh of relief a tad too quickly. With just seven seconds left in regulation, Suter struck again, tying the game up and officially cutting the three-goal deficit they had only 60 seconds ago. The clock continued to go in the final seven seconds, the scoreboard then showing a 5-5 game, sending them into overtime.
Three minutes and 44 seconds into overtime, Kiefer Sherwood sniped a shot past Casey DeSmith, winning the game for the Canucks at 6-5. History was made on the ice last night with an amazing team effort, as the Canucks became the first team in the National Hockey League to ever trail by three goals in the final minute of regulation and go on to win the game.
The Vancouver Canucks picked up two points with that win as they now are slotted fifth in the Pacific division with 85 points, six points behind the Minnesota Wild who currently take up the space for the second Western Conference wild card spot with four games left in their regular season, making it possible to grab eight points still. Anything can happen, history can be made, the Canucks don't want you writing them off quite yet this season.
