The Calgary Flames once had names like Theoren Fluery, Jarome Iginla, and Al MacInnis. Now, they have multiple young players who are looking to leave their own legacy in the coming years. This season, the Flames will look to further develop their young talent but also hope to grab a playoff spot.
Flames players to watch
Zayne Parekh
Calgary defenseman Zayne Parekh made his NHL debut last season and played only one game but left a lasting impression. He debuted on April 17, 2024, against the Los Angeles Kings. It was a memorable game for him as he scored his first NHL goal o 20 minutes of action but was also a +3. That gave the youngster confidence heading into this season to grab a permanent role on the blue line.He is Calgary's top prospect on defense and comes with great puck-handling skills. While he needs to work on his defensive game, the rest of the tools are there for him to be a special player who could be the cornerstone of the franchise.
Ivan Prosvetov
Goaltender Ivan Prosvetov comes to Calgary after spending last season with the Colorado Avalanche. Between the Avalanche pipes, he posted a record of 4-3-1 with a 3.16 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. A fourth-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes in 2018, he is the backup for the upcoming season. He has only 24 games of NHL experience but is more than capable of giving Wolf a night off and keeping the Flames in the game. He is still young in the league but he has been solid thus far and could give the Flames an outstanding duo.
Can Dustin Wolf build on rookie success?
Calgary netminder Wolf had an incredibly successful rookie season in the 2024-25 season. The seventh-round pick in 2019 posted a record of 29-16-8 with a 2.64 goals against average , a .910 save percentage, and three shutouts. His season was so good that he came in second in the Calder Trophy voting for the league's best rookie.
He finished the season strong going 4-0-1 in his last five regular season games and is hoping to carry that strong play into the upcoming season. He proved last season he can be a number one goaltender in the NHL and can handle a big workload. Wolf is not a big goaltender but he lets his play on the ice speak for itself. He could have another outstanding season.
The Flames are a dark-horse team to watch in the 2025-26 season. They do not have the talent aht msot teams do but they have a solid foundation that could sneak up on some teams. With the youth in the lineup to go along with veteran leadership and a strong goaltending duo, Calgary could make some noise and impact the Western Conference. Look for Calgary to make the playoffs and if everything holds together maybe even past the first round.
