I'm going to start off this article by wishing my readers a happy belated St Patrick's Day.
And it was a good one across the NHL, with a handful of teams organizing St Patrick's Day-themed game nights.
In Toronto, the Maple Leafs commemorated St Patrick's Day by reviving their St Pats jerseys for their game against the New York Islanders. Traditionally, when the Leafs play at home on or around St Patrick's Day, the team will bring back their St Pats identity that they held prior to becoming the Maple Leafs in 1927.
The jerseys were once again a hit, but the Leafs performance was not; Matthew Schaefer and Co, in addition to 1000 friends and family strong, would end up walking out of Scotiabank Arena with a 3-1 win. Callum Ritchie, Brayden Schenn, and Emil Heineman would score for the Islanders while Schaefer would record an assist and three shots on goal. For the Leafs, Steven Lorentz would score the team's lone goal of the night, which was assisted by Benoit-Olivier Groulx.
Elsewhere, the Columbus Blue Jackets were also in the St Patrick's Day spirit, with the team putting together a themed game night and their mascot Stinger wearing a leprechaun costume for the night. The Jackets would go on to record what would be their second win on St. Patrick's Day, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes by a score of 5-1. The game saw nine players record at least a point, with three of them recording multiple points. Most notably, Charlie Coyle record four points (one goal and three assists) while adding four shots on goal. The lone Carolina goal was scored by Andrei Svechnikov from Nikolaj Ehlers and Alexander Nikishin.
Finally, in Las Vegas, the Golden Knights ran their second annual Go Green Knight game day on St Patrick's Day. The initiative seeks to combine environmental awareness, hockey, and the St Patrick's Day spirit in one game day event.
While the event was once again a success, the corresponding Golden Knights game was anything but. The Buffalo Sabres won a closely-fought, grind-it-out-style of contest that ultimately resulted in a 2-0 decision. Josh Doan scored what would be the game winner late in the first period, while Josh Norris would insure the win with an empty-net goal.
