OHL expansions gaining momentum, with Chatham-Kent and Cornwall entering the discussion

While expansion has been on the table for the OHL in recent years, only recently have these discussions begun to materialize in the form of concrete, founded rumors. Most recently, these discussions have pointed to Chatham-Kent and Cornwall being two options for future expansion.

A few weeks ago, talks of OHL expansion first started to gain official momentum when the City of Vaughan announced its intention to explore the possibility of building an OHL-ready arena.

Now, it seems that such a possibility is starting to gain significant backing across the province.

Alongside the Vaughan arena news, it seems that the OHL is considering the cities of Chatham-Kent and Cornwall for expansion.

Last week, the league confirmed that discussions were taking place with members of Chatham-Kent's City Council among others; the discussions were aimed at launching the process of bringing an OHL franchise to the municipality.

According to CTV News, both Chatham-Kent and the OHL have expressed interest in establishing a team.

If Chatham-Kent were to join the OHL, several possible regional rivalries would be created right off the bat. Two such rivalries come in the form of the Windsor Spitfires and London Knights; Chatham-Kent is an hour outside of Windsor and just under 90 minutes from London. The municipality is also just over an hour away from the city of Sarnia, home to the Sting.

On the east end of the province, the City of Cornwall is also being considered as a future home of an OHL team.

Previously the home of the Cornwall Royals, the City of Cornwall has long been rumored as a potential site for future expansion, with several sources expressing the fact that there is interest on the part of the city.

While there was a recent visit to the Cornwall Civic Complex, it remains to be seen if that is uniquely for an event of some form for next season or if it could also hint at a future Cornwall-based expansion side.

To add onto the possibility of a future Cornwall-based franchise, renovations have been taking place at the Civic Complex, potentially making Cornwall a more appealing option for the OHL as it pursues expansion.

It remains to be seen when additional word on the OHL's expansion goals will become clear, if at all.
