Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad has been suspended 20 games by the NHL for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA performance enhancing substances program. Ekblad will miss the remaining 2024-25 schedule but will be eligible to return in the playoffs.

Panthers' Ekblad suspended for first time

On Monday, the NHL/NHLPA was given a mandatory referral for the suspension. It was for the program that allows players to get the help they need for substance abuse and behavioral health. Ekblad will be seen and undergo evaluation and be given possible treatment options.

Panthers' Ekblad makes statement

Per Ekblad as part of the announcement, "I made a mistake by taking something to help me recover from recent injuries without first checking with proper medical and team personnel."

Ekblad is Florida's best defenseman, which is saying a lot. The Panthers face a major loss to the defensive core but it already may have come with a piece to fill that void. With Ekblad playing a major role on the top-pairing, it might be an option to play newly acquired Seth Jones in that spot.

Gustav Forsling would be his partner and Jones could slide in until Ekblad returns because, he too, is a right-handed shot. A call-up from the Charlotte Checkers, the Panthers American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, is possible.

Ekblad closes the season with three goals and 33 assists for 36 points in 56 games. He has been consistent all season and has done so since his rookie season. He has been a big reason why the Panthers have been so successful over the past few seasons. This will be a big loss but Florida has depth so filling that void may be easier than some people think, although his leadership and presence cannot be replaced.

Ekblad's suspension is rare but not unheard of. Current Panthers defenseman Nate Schmidt was suspended on the same charge when he was a member of the Vegas Golden Knights.

With 18 games left on the season, Florida is in a dog fight with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. The loss of Ekblad will take its toll on the roster, but will it have a major effect on the standings? Florida is up for a fight and the play of the new defensive pairings may determine how this season, and the playoff seeds, play out.
