The Washington Capitals are a surprisingly good team. They didn't come into this season with a lot of expectations but they are competing for the playoffs.
Their captain Alex Ovechkin is always in the news because of how close he is to the all-time goals scored record held by Wayne Gretzky. Ovechkin entered play on Monday second all-time with 841.
He then scored two against the Calgary Flames to get himself up to 843. He is now 51 goals away from tying the mark set by The Great One and 52 away from breaking it.
These goals were Ovechkin's 20th and 21st of the season. He now is on year 19 in a row with 20 which is a remarkable number.
The Washington Capitals are looking for big things down the stretch
Ovechkin had a slow start. He had eight goals on Christmas and now he's up to 21. There is a good chance that he will end up leading the team in goals by the end of the season. He is also racking up assists too so he is having a very nice age-38 season.
This 5-2 win for Washington over Calgary put them in the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Their 75 points jumped in over the Detroit Red Wings.
It is going to be a grind for the final few weeks of the season but they put themselves in a position to get in when nobody thought they could.
If they do get in, Spencer Carbery is going to get a lot of credit for it. He came in and helped this team do what they needed to do to be successful. His name will appear on a ton of Coach of the Year ballots. He may even end up winning if they make it.
Their next game will come against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday. This is a big matchup between two teams that need the points too which makes it even more exciting. Hopefully, the Caps continue to find ways to be entertaining and Ovechkin keeps scoring.
