The Edmonton Oilers have an all-time great in Connor McDavid and they know it. They’ve known it for a long time. On Tuesday, however, he put on a show unlike any other in his career.

The Oilers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 8-4 and McDavid had a whopping 6 points. All six of his points were assists. There were also five different goal scorers for McDavid’s six assists which is incredible. Only Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two.

Did you ever think that McDavid would reach a six-point game without scoring a goal? Well, that’s exactly what he did here. He is one of the greatest players who ever lived. This is a night to be proud of for the Oilers who haven’t lost much since mid-December.

McDavid is only the third player to have a six-point game since 2020. His teammate Leon Draisaitl is one and Kristopher Letang of the Pittsburg Penguins is the other.

He is more than just a creator of offense too. He helps his team with defense and picks possession just as much as he does with the offense. In this six-point game, he was on the ice for seven 5-on-5 goals, had a 73.01 xGF at even strength, and won 63 percent of his faceoffs. It was a brilliant game as you could play in the NHL.

The Red Wings had a chance to win this game. They were tied at 3 when the second period ended thanks to a goal by Patrick Kane. At that point, McDavid only had two points. He put up a casual four points in the third period which made the final score look much more lopsided.

As incredible as McDavid is, he wants to win. Edmonton needed that type of game from him to get the two points. If they needed more defense from him, he’d get it done. They are firmly back in the playoff race and McDavid’s surge is a big reason why.

On the season, he has 21 goals and 56 assists for 77 points in 47 games played. He should blow past 100 points with ease. He may even get involved in the scoring title race despite his little injury slump early in the year. If he keeps playing like this, nothing is impossible.

Speaking of impossible, McDavid is already closing in on 1000 points. He has 927 right now so he needs 73 more. Can he get it done this season? It is going to be close but it feels just out of reach. It won’t take him long to get that milestone next year.

His third of six assists on the night was the 600th of his NHL career. For being only 27 years old, this is pretty legendary. He is worth the price of admission on his own. All hockey fans should be watching the Oilers when they can.
