A lot of things have been going well for the Philadelphia Flyers this season. They might not be the very best team in the Eastern Conference but they have been much better than anticipated.
Right now, they are 25-18-6 which is good for third place in the Metropolitan Division. A lot of people thought that they might be one of the worst teams in the league but they are far from that.
John Tortorella has his guys playing hard every single game. One of the players that has been most impressive under Torts this season is Owen Tippett.
Tippett has played in 46 games so far this season. In those 46 games, he has 18 goals and 12 assists for 30 points. She should break his career high in goals (27) and points (49) by the time the season is over.
Owen Tippett has become a very good player for the Philadelphia Flyers
At 24 years old (he turns 25 in mid-February), there is a lot of hockey left to be played for him in his career. It is good to see him having a second straight good season early his his career.
Tippett was acquired by the Flyers in the blockbuster trade that sent Claude Giroux to the Florida Panthers. Before that, he was the 10th overall pick by Florida in the 2017 NHL Draft.
On Friday, news broke of a big contract extension for Tippett. The Flyers extended him for 8 years with a cap hit of $6.2 million. It is a great deal for both sides and it could turn into a team-friendly deal at some point.
With his production the way that it is right now, Tippitt is a really good player. However, if he could ever take it one step further when it comes to his playmaking, he will be an incredibly valuable asset to the Flyers lineup.
The Flyers have a lot of good young talent surrounding Tippett as well. People like Jamie Drysdale, Matvei Michkov, and Bobby Orr Brink amongst others are going to be outstanding with Tippett. If they can keep building around this new young core that they have assembled, good things will happen.
