The New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers don't get along. They haven't ever in either team's history. They are the closest geographical rivals in the NHL so it is to be expected.
They played each other in the playoffs last season which will always create drama between two rivals. New Jersey won that series in seven games.
The Devils aren't having a good season this year as injuries, bad goaltending, and questionable coaching have led to them having a down year. Meanwhile, the Rangers have already clinched a playoff berth.
One big storyline from their matchups this season has been Matt Rempe. He made his NHL debut back in February and made a name for himself by fighting in almost every game he played in to start his career.
The New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers have plenty of bad blood
Coming into Wednesday night's matchup with New Jersey, Rempe had been ejected in each of his two appearances against them this season. He is also responsible for injuring a couple of their players which does not sit well with the Devils.
You knew there were going to be some fireworks in this one as a result of this bad blood. Kurtis McDermid was inserted into the Devils' lineup to help them in their quest to send a message.
He fought Matt Rempe right off the opening faceoff. From there, things went crazy. All ten skaters on the ice engaged in a fight. It was an all-out line brawl.
In addition to that scrap between Rempe and McDermid, Curtis Lazar fought Jimmy Vesey, Chris Tierney fought Jacob Trouba, John Marino fought K'Andre Miller, and Kevin Bahl fought Barclay Goodrow.
Every player except for Curtis Lazar and Jimmy Vesey were given game misconduct penalties. Although McDermid and Rempe were the main event, they technically didn't get the gloves off first so Vesey and Lazar just got off with the normal fighting majors.
After the fight, Devils interim head coach Travis Green and Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette were going after each other verbally from the bench. It was truly an odd sight to see.
This is the second time that the teams had an all-out brawl off the opening draw. The Devils and Rangers had a very similar situation happen back in 2012. It even led to the two coaches at the time, Peter DeBoer and John Tortorella, getting into it. History is repeating itself.
This game will be shown on highlight reels for weeks to come. The rivalry is officially back at its peak following this brawl.
