While free agency has died down, the Detroit Red Wings are still in pursuit of offense. They had their dip in free agency, signing mostly depth players. However, it seems like the only way to improve now is through trade.

Many teams are above the salary cap and need to move cap space out. With that said, general mananger Steve Yzerman still has a way to salvage this offseason: trading for either Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson or young Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish.

Red Wings, Yzerman have time to make a move

It is no secret that the Red Wings need offensive and defensive help. If the defense improves, then the forwards still need scoring. If the forward group improves, they can also help out defensively. Two targets for Yzerman in a big move could solidify this lineup tremendously. What would the cost be? Would Yzerman be willing to play a big price to help round out the team?

Roberston is an elite goal scorer who will not come cheap. he has been consistent in Dallas and is a big reason for their success of late. With the Stars acquisition of forward Mikko Rantanen, this could make Robertson more expendable. The Red Wings have something going for them in any possible trade. Draft picks, prospects, and NHL-ready players are all on the table.

Robertson would immediately slide into the top line and top power play unit, making them both dangerous offensively. He provides a dynamic that other forwards do not as he is a big body that can socre with the best of them. Unloading some big pieces would be worth it for Robertson's services.

McTavish is another story. While it would take another big package to acquire him, the cost may not be as big as the one for Robertson. Anaheim could be looking at a different kind of deal as they are on their way up and Dallas is already an established team.

Anaheim and Detroit are familiar with each other as they have traded goaltenders John Gibson, Petr Mrazek, and Ville Husso, along with forward Robby Fabbri. Yzerman also played with Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek. McTavish is a gritty young player who can also score. His style of play is something Detroit could use on their roster due to them lacking that particular skill set.

Yzerman was active during free agency, signing players for depth and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. However, the team needs a big time player. They have been close to a playoff spot and a player like Robertson or McTavish could certainly take them over the top.

While players like Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, and Patrick Kane have been impressive, the Red Wings need a player who can be clutch in close games and certain situations. Robertson gives them a bona fide goal scorer. McTavish gives them youth, grit, and offensive production. Getting one of them would give this team a much needed boost. Imagine if Yzerman worked his magic and acquired them both.
