Colorado Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood has been in the NHL for a minute but has always taken a back seat to the starter of the team he played for. Now, he is one of the top goaltenders in the league for a team with the best record. While it is early, Wedgewood has displayed the ability to carry this team. He has been consistent and unbelievable in starts, leading Colorado to the top of the league. Can he keep it going?
Wedgewood carrying the load in net
Wedgewood has seen stops with the Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, Arizona Coyotes, and Dallas Stars. For the most part, he has been the backup but now he has earned the right to shine between the pipes for the Avalanche. He was traded by the Predators to the Avalanche for goaltender Justus Annunen and a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. He has been nothing short of amazing during his time in Colorado. This season, he is 5-0-1 with a 1.48 goals against average and a .938 save percentage. In 25 games for the Avalanche, he is 180402 with a .922 save percentage and a 1.87 goals against average.
The third-round pick in the 2010 NHL Draft (84th overall) hass risen to new heights and found a new lease on life. His 1.48 goals against average is fourth in the league, five wins rank first in the league, his 136 saves are second, his .938 save percentage is sixth, and his 364:18 on ice time is also first.

Not only has he been spectacular to watch and good for his personal stats, but his teammates are riding the hot streak also. As a team, Colorado is 5-0-1 for 11 points and is one point ahead of teh Carolina Hurricanes for the top overall spot. The team defense has also been amazing in the early going. Their team goals against average of 1.50 is first in the league, penalty kill is seventh (87.5), 24.2 shots against per game is fifth, and their nine goals against total this season ranks second in the league.
Whether Colorado and Wedgewood can keep up this type of pace is unknown but tehy are playing their best hockey right now. Everything is clicking and ll forward lines and defensive pairings are on the same page. Colorado has been a top team in the league for the past several seasons but this season they look dangerous. Can this season be the season they put it all together for another lengthy playoff run? With Nathan MacKinnon remaining a scoring machine, defenseman Cale Makar doing his thing, and Wedgewood a brick wall anything can happen.
