Ending Sunday's game with a shootout win against the Montreal Canadiens, Sidney Crosby officially surpassed fellow Penguins legend Mario Lemieux to take home the franchise's all-time record for points. Crosby now carries 1,724 points, passing Lemieux's previous mark of 1,723 points.

Named the First Star of the night, Crosby secured the record-breaking point with a goal in the first period, which also served to tie the game.

"I knew when we played together in 2005, that you were going to be a very special player, and accomplish a lot of great things in your career," Lemieux said in the video message posted by the Penguins on Twitter/X.

Crosby described Lemieux as, "a great role model and someone I look up to a lot," and after the game, Crosby told media, "He's [Mario] still number one in my books," still showing respect for his role model, despite breaking the franchise's all-time points record.

Mario Lemieux was drafted 1st overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1984, the same year Crosby's father, Troy Crosby, was picked 240th overall by the Montrèal Canadiens in the same year, but never played in the NHL. 22 years later, Sidney Crosby was drafted 1st overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005, and the rest is history.

The Kid from Nova Scotia was named as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017, and his career achievements include:

  • Stanley Cup Champion: 2009, 2016, 2017
  • Art Ross Trophy (League Scoring Leader): 2007, 2014
  • Conn Smythe Trophy (Playoffs MVP): 2016, 2017
  • Hart Memorial Trophy (Regular Season MVP): 2010
  • Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy (League Goal Leader): 2010
  • Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award: 2010, 2017
  • Ted Lindsay Award (Most Outstanding Player voted by NHLPA): 2007, 2013, 2014

His name is not only known in the NHL world, but globally, as he scored the famous overtime "Golden Goal" for Canada in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics final against the United States.

The nation of Canada eagerly awaits Crosby and the team to win another gold medal for the country at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, where Crosby has already been named to the preliminary roster.

Said by fellow teammate Bryan Rust, "Sid is the Pittsburgh Penguins; himand Mario."
